When I first started domaining I used to pour over spreadsheet after spreadsheet to extract as much value out of my domains as possible. After discovering that Excel had a 64,000 row limit (thank goodness that this was addressed in 2003) I moved on to develop my own database driven domain management system.

Over the years I've seen domainer after domainer go through a very similar process. Excel, to a database and then further to ever more complex data structures and management tools sticky taped together so that they can get greater value out of their domains. I hate to say it but my recommendation is to stop wasting your time and outsource the management problem.

outsource_slideI view managing and optimisng domains yourself to being similar to a stock day trader versus outsourcing to a professional stock broker with all of the tools and information at their fingertips. Sure, some day-traders make money but the vast majority end up getting burnt while on the whole stockbrokers tend to increase a portfolios wealth in line with the market. This is a classic case of an imbalance of information and expertise giving the professional an advantage over the semi-amateur.

At the recent DomainFest conference I put a slide up that summarized my view of the Excel/database steps I see domainers go through. I then recommended to all those present to go the outsource route so that they could concentrate on acquiring domains and honing their expertise in that area. I was surprised by the number of people that came up to me afterwards and shared their stories of going through the exact path I just outlined only to find that outsourcing is a better option.

I'm a part owner of ParkLogic and we provide an outsourcing service for many domainers but please explore the other options available. While ParkLogic specialize in optimization and increasing the revenue of a domain companies such as dnZoom solve the problem of managing registrars and aggregating information. Check out the options and work with the company that provides the results and service that you're after.
