I apologise that it's been a few days since my last post but I've been pretty busy building out ParkLogic's system to optimize domain name traffic. I thought that it would be good to continue my series on domain optimisation from our recent experiences with ParkLogic.
The first thing to remember about your domains is that tracking the statistics is absolutely critical if you wish to continue to increase your revenue. The problem with doing this is that you can end up working pretty hard for your passive income. :-) It's a lifestyle decision that shouldn't be taken lightly.
Tracking keyword performance across time is the first stage in keyword optimisation. You can't just set a keyword and then forget about it if you wish to maximise your revenue. For example the below graphic is a snapshot of what has happened to the keyword "online games" over a 3 month period of time.
You can clearly see that a new keyword needs to be applied to domains using this keyword as there was almost a linear fall in the value of the keyword for a about one month. Likewise, the spike at the end of this fall represents an area that we can exploit and potentially apply to many of our domains with games traffic.
The challenge in building a system is to predict the sharp rises and falls in EPC (Earnings Per Click) across time for thousands of keywords. This particular graph is statistics generated by a good sample of domains parked at Sedo therefore you also need to take into account the parking company and geographic region of the traffic.
The parking company influences your results because they are often constantly "tweaking" their system and the contracts between parking company and advertising partner (ie. Google/Yahoo) vary greatly on geographic region. The fact that the contracts appear to vary upon geographic region is a whole interesting discussion in itself.
The geographic region the traffic and the destination domain will also influence the decision as to whether or not a particular keyword should be applied to a domain or not. For instance the above graph was for largely co.uk traffic delivered by Sedo.
As you can see there are a lot of variables that are beginning to stack up to optimise domains and we haven't even begun to discuss the normalisation of data between parking companies. Until next time!
