At the beginning of the year we setup our own DNS for ParkLogic (wiki). What we've found is really interesting.

highway_sceneFor a start by having your own DNS (wiki) you are able to view the actual traffic that a domain is generating rather than what a parking company is reporting to you. We've foundlarge variations in the differences between the two which makes you wonder what's happened to all of that traffic.

One of the problems that parking companies have is that they need to filter out fraudulent traffic and this often reduces the level of genuine traffic. Until we resolve the issue of fraudulent traffic I believe that this is just going to be a cost of doing business that we all need to work with.

What else have we found in the DNS? How much graphics and other traffic a particular domain generates. There is an enormous amount of this traffic for some domains compared to the easily monetizable HTML based traffic. There's also a LOT of email traffic that arrives from previously active domains.

What surprised us the most was the fact that we started getting traffic from domains that we've never seen before. We even have traffic from google.com hitting our server! I know that this sounds crazy but it's true.

After talking about our findings with a couple of tech-savy domainers we came to the conclusion that it may be better to just setup a DNS and a webserver on a box and monetize the traffic that's hitting it that's never been purchased - LOL!

So what's really happening? For the majority of this "ghost" traffic I can only think that the IP address that our box is currently using was previously being used by someone else or it may have been hosting a shared server. Traffic will continue to hit the box from badly setup DNS servers from around the world until eventually the entries expire in their cache tables.

So here's a business concept. Install a DNS and webserver on a box at a hosting company and specifically ask them for an old, previously used IP address. I'm sure that you'll start generating a LOT of traffic. In fact, it's such a good idea, I think that I'll try it out! I can now see the domain community soaking up domains AND IP addresses out there :-)
