Once again I find myself in the Melbourne, Australia Qantas club about to board QF93 to LA and DomainFest. It's getting to be a bit of a strange feeling as I greet some of my now good friends at the reception desk and they say comments like, "It's good to see you again Michael". Hmmmmm......maybe I've been flying a little too much!

manfloatingDespite the familiar feel of the airport and the inconvenience of the security checks this flight will be totally different. This time my son Timothy is joining Laci (head of ParkLogic operations) and I on the journey so that he can experience what it means to be a domainer as well as help out on the ParkLogic booth. BTW - drop in a say hello to us all as I'm always up for a chat about domains and getting the most from them.

So Tim and I are sitting next to each other on the 16 hour flight so we'll be having a little bit of father-son bonding time enforced by the proximity of economy seats. Nothing like being squeezed into a sardine can that flies.

The flights just been called so I'd better sign-off and get going. See you all in LA!

Once again I find myself in the Qantas club at Melbourne airport waiting for good old QF93 to Los Angeles. Although the 15 hours of flying is a pain in the neck (quite literally) I must admit that I'm really excited about this trip.

jetlagAfter a few meetings in LA both the ParkLogic operations manager (Laci Nagy) and I are heading to Denver, New York and then down to TRAFFIC in Fort Lauderdale. If there are any domainers around Manhatten next Wedesday evening (ie. 12th Oct) then I'm up for dinner and a few drinks! Ping me an email if your interested.

Down in Fort Lauderdale ParkLogic is sponsoring TRAFFIC and it's going to be a fantastic conference. Rick, Howard and the whole TRAFFIC team is pulling out all the stops to make it one of the most memorable the industry has ever experienced. I last heard that it's sold out which means it's going to be a place where serious business is done.

Just had my flight called....gotta go. Cheers!

Dell is the most frustrating company in the world PDF Print E-mail

I've always liked Dell products but their customer service is terrible!

Here's my story.......

1. I order 2 laptops. The fact that I didn't order within a predetermined period of time because I had to find out some information meant that I had to re-enter all the information a second time. Why not tell people there is a time limit? Go figure??????

2. I receive an email that says that the order is acknowledged but not confirmed. No problem.

3. My business partner said that I could get an additional discount with his autoclub member number.....sounded good to me so I called Dell customer service and this is where my disaster starts.

4. Customer service indicated that they couldn't apply the discount to their system and that I would have to talk to sales or cancel the order and re-enter all the information in again. Nothing like talking to a call centre in Malaysia where the people have no power or authority.....sigh....

5. I called Dell sales (routed again through to Malaysia) and they couldn't help either and said that the laptops were in the factory. I told them that the last communication that I received from Dell was verifying the order and NOT billing my credit card and organising the order. They said that I could cancel the order. So I did that and asked them to confirm that the order was cancelled three times!

6. Given that I had little faith in Dell customer service cancelling the order prior to me re-ordering the same two laptops with the discount code I decided to track down the Sydney office phone number. It's clear to me that this is a national secret because it's IMPOSSIBLE to get an Australian to speak to! This was very frustrating.

7. Being the creative person that I am I decided to try the random selection approach. Pressed option 4 for extension number, dialed 861 (Dell Sydney is now using 8 digit extensions) followed by 5687. I waited and pressed 0 a few times and ended up in Dell Canberra......yes...you read right. This person indicated that they were a serviced office and would try and get someone from Dell.....still waiting......

8. Then miracle of miracles I found the Dell head office phone number!!!!! Hooray!!!! So I dial (02) 8972 5000 and ended up at the standard Dell "support" line. OK - time for more creative thinking..... I now dialed (02) 8972 5011 and had no luck.....but then I thought that I struck Gold....I dialed 12 as the last two digits. I asked if this person was from Australia and they said "YES" at which point I nearlly burst into tears with relief and begged them not to transfer me anywhere. They said "No problem" in an Indian accent (btw, I love Indians and I have nothing against them).....I said, "You're from Malaysia aren't you?" They said, "Yes". I replied, "Not again...." and then hung up.

9. I then braved the customer service support number AGAIN and passed all my details on AGAIN to double check that the order had been cancelled. It hadn't!!!!!!!!!!! I think that I'm going to go completely INSANE!!!!!

10. Sometime during this insanity I managed to find a place where I could get my discount code for my autoclub membership. I entered it into the Dell site and instantly my order increased in price by $300.....now I'm really ticked off. Nowhere does it say that the discount cannot be applied to any other Dell offer.

10. Where am I at.....I'm about to go and call AMEX and deny the Dell transactions. I'll probably get a couple of laptops delivered that I actually want but not for the price. Who knows with Dell, they've got to be the most incompetent organisation in the world. I'm going to now make it a mission in life to track down that Sydney office phone number.

11. I know that I've forgotten a number of other steps in the process....such as the one where I actually got a Dell employees voice mail. They called back and were actually extremely helpful and noticed that my order actually hadn't been cancelled. In the end they said it was a good price and I should just take the laptops.

What's really frustrating about this entire experience is that I've always been a great fan of Dell and showed off my own XPS notebook to many colleagues and friends. I've had Dell's for years but this experience (which is still going on as of this writing) has showed me that Jeff Jarvis who wrote about his own Dell catastrophy a number of years ago was completely right. In the end they resolved things for him but the jury is out in my own experience.

In the meantime I'm posting this on my blog (http://www.whizzbangsblog.com) and sharing my excrutiating experience with as many people as possible. Also, since I'm the founder of ParkLogic.com and we run a company that manages over 500,000 domain names I'm considering placing a popunder under every one of those domains pointing to my blog article. It really depends on Dell's reaction. We currently receive over 10 million unique visitors per day so hopefully that will get your attention.

If you are a blogger, feel free to pick up this article.

criminalA friend of mine received the following email the other day and it clearly offers BIG dollars for accounts in a number of parking companies. You'll notice that even my own company, ParkLogic made this hit parade! For those of you that are congratulating yourselves because you are not on the list…..don’t worry your name’s on other emails.

Subject: Domain Parking Joint Venture

Hi Dear Domain parking accounts owners,

I am writing to know whether we can have an opportunity to do a domain parking account Joint Venture cooperation together please.

Please allow me to introduce myself a bit. It is XXXXXXX from XXXXXXXXXX LL C which based in China. I hope this email gets you right. our company has been working as a traffic provider in this field for 5 years and achieve a great success with most of the parking companies. Now there are 50 people working in our company as a professional team with the commission of providing best valued quality and trustworthy service. More than 40 stuff members have been allocated to do the tech work to maintain a great TQ score with every account that are been running. The high responsibility for our clients and supporters and the great service has earned us with a great reputation.

We are also happy to know that you have a huge portfolio of domains in hand and have a lot of domain parking accounts with some of the domain name monetization platforms.

We will be greatly honored if we can have a client like.
If you do not mind, I am happy to tell you the revenue amount we can generate with most of the domain parking systems per month as follow:
Hotkeys.com 20.000--40,000 USD per month
DDC.com 15,000--30,000 USD per month
Hitfarm.com 20,000--40,000 USD per month
Trafficz.com 10,000--20,000 USD per month
Parklogic.om 15,000--30,000 USD per month
And the revenue amount can be increased a lot if we can add more domains to the accounts.

Could you please kindly schedule a time and reply to me? I am listening to all of your suggestion and proposal. We can schedule a phone call to talk about the details if you like. Please reply to me no matter you are interested or not. We will really appreciate that.

Looking forward to your reply.

Scams and pillaging like this just continue to be a feature of the domain industry. You’ve got to ask yourself…..if the quality of the traffic is so high why do they need to buy an account by burning your reputation? Easy answer…..the TQ may be artificially high for a time but the conversion for advertisers is just not there.

For some reason some scumbags like this still assume that it’s OK to burn someone else’s reputation because they’ve already practiced scorched earth on their own. The sad thing is that many of these people come from China and cast a VERY bad light on the domain owners from China that try and do the right thing.

If you’ve received emails like this then feel free to send them through to me. If you’re tempted to take the emailer up on their offer then may I suggest that it would be better to destroy your conscience, ethics and reputation in another industry….as you will be caught. I wonder if it’s about time that a criminal prosecution is conducted and someone is made an example of…..

In the meantime, I’ve got my creative juices flowing on how to solve this problem for the industry once and for all. I just can’t believe that so many companies that have lost so much money have put up with this garbage for so long. Stay tuned!

Saturday Musings - Domainer Scumbags PDF Print E-mail

Please excuse the rant that I'm about to have but if like me you love the domain industry then I'm sure you'll enjoy it! I never thought that I’d put the words “domainer” and “scumbags” in the same sentence but it’s long overdue. There are a whole lot of domainers that are great people and there are a lot of scumbags…..so a message to all the good guys, beware!

Saturday MusingsOur industry that I love and cherish is currently being inundated with the lowest of the low and the problem is growing worse not better. The practices of these people have moved from impacted our wallets to stealing who we are and I thought that it was about time that I exposed some of their practices.

1.    I have 200 domains which do $300 per day with good TQ traffic. Sure you do….I believe it, NOT! It just so happens that the majority of these domains are .infos and your IP address says that your from China while your street address in the account application is LA. The traffic is garbage and I don’t want any of it since it will directly lower the revenue line of good customers.

2.    We’ve recently had a lot of “good domainers” apply for a whole lot of ParkLogic accounts. Why do I know they’re good? When you’ve been in the industry as long as I have then you make a lot of personal friends and when a personal friend signs up for an account rather then just having a chat with you then you know something is up. One scumbag signed up with all of my friends personal details and then progressively began to steal their reputation and identity. Sadly, I couldn’t quite get all the correct details of the thief out of them before they realised that I was collecting data to hopefully pass onto my friend’s lawyers!

3.    I want to buy a parking account and I’ll pay anything up to $2,000. You’ve got to ask why would anyone bother buying a parking account? Why not just sign-up yourself? The reason why is that these people are such rabid scumbags that they’ve developed a reputation amongst all the parking companies so that that they are now individually completely blocked from signing up or even their whole nation is blocked! They’re now getting other people to sign-up for them and they then pump their garbage traffic down the pipe to destroy good domainers value.

4.    I can manage click through rate to whatever you want. Yes, I did have someone tell me this. This is “bot” traffic and is fraud, fraud, fraud! This is stealing from advertisers and WILL NOT be tolerated. I’m always amazed that these scumbags spend huge amounts of time developing more sophisticated ways to try and “beat” the system when if they applied their technical skills to what is good then they’d probably be rich by now.

My company, ParkLogic is a fraudsters worst nightmare. Why do I say this? For a start, anyone that doesn’t completely fill out the sign-up form are immediately rejected. Secondly, they must pass an interview process that asks some very specific questions (some of these questions would surprise you). Around 98% of potential new customers are eliminated at this stage

Thirdly, we have our own anti-fraud checks in place that are being continuously run across accounts. Lastly, because we work with every major monetisation partner a scumbag has to also pass EVERYONE’s anti-fraud checks! If you fail on ANYONE then you FAIL on them ALL and your account is terminated. So go and pump your garbage traffic down someone else’s pipe.

So a notice to all scumbags out there that you are now on notice. The parking industry and good domain owners are sick to death of your practices and many of us are now beginning to co-operate on sharing information on your new “tricks”.

To all good domain owners. If you know of anyone that is lowering your revenue with their garbage traffic then it’s about time we expose them. The industry needs to be cleaned up for all our sakes so let’s work together to improve traffic for advertisers so that they are so hungry that they will pay more for the gold that we own!
