Have you ever been trapped by your computer? I sometimes think that my PC is like some prehistoric creature with tentacles growing out the side that suck me in. I find that I say that I'll only spend a couple of minutes working on the weekend but the hours just seem to slip by.
I think that domainers are really guilty about forgetting that work is not actually an end in itself. We're tethered to the Internet by high speed connections and even when we're out we're check our cell phones constantly for email. Sometimes the frantic pace of life just needs to stop.
In a recent business meeting one of the individuals was constantly checking their phone for messages that in the end I asked them if there was a more convenient time to meet in person. If you ever have to take a call in a meeting then let the person your meeting with know beforehand..... don't constantly check your phone.
I had a similar connectivity experience at a party for one of my daughters where over two thirds of her friends were on their cell phones at any one time. It was incredible to see young people get together so that they could communicate with people that weren't there......go figure????
I think that this sort of behaviour is having two impacts on people. The first is the rudeness of never actually being anywhere with anyone. By constantly check for messages what you're saying is the person on the phone is more important than the person that you're physically with.
The second problem is I find that many connectivity addicts have a greatly reduced attention span. They are constantly having their advert break with an SMS or email rather than focusing on actual social discourse or even watching a movie with friends.
Don't get me wrong in all of this.....I'm wired and wirelessly connected to the hilt BUT I discovered a great feature of any electronic gizmo. It's called the off switch. Turn whatever that you use off and spend some time with friends and family.....leave the cell phone at home. I think that many people will be surprised that they actually go through a form of psychological withdrawal. You may actually discover that there is more to life than the drug of connectivity.....make sure you control it not it control you.
