Yesterday I was happily working in my study at home when at around 4pm all hell broke loose. Well, not exactly hell but the kids arrived home from school and the noise level in the house approached that of a rage party.  It's the end of term and the beginning of school holidays so my kids fully expressed their relief to be free from the threat of homework.

MG_Avatar_Apr2011Not to worry I had two doors between them and my important business call I was just about to get onto so all would be good. Just when I closed the doors and sat back at my desk they were quickly opened by my youngest daughter to get a pen. She then left and being twelve years old left the doors completely open. I got up closed the doors and started my skype call with one of the members of the ParkLogic team. One minute later the doors were flung open and daughter number one came to get some paper. She left and the doors remained open wide.

I can only thank skype for introducing the "mute" button so that after the seventh time the doors were left open the head of ParkLogic operations didn't hear me fully express my frustration towards my loved ones about the fact that doors needed to be closed. Ahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

It was then that my mother called on my desk phone and she couldn't understand the fact that since I was at home I was also working. Don't get me wrong I love my mum but wanting an in depth conversation about the flowers growing in the garden while I've got someone on hold and a couple of IM sessions in progress isn't conducive to pleasant conversation.

Interruptions and distractions even from loved ones can be the death of any business and Domaining is exactly the same. I've talked to a number of people recently that are intent on "building out" a number of domains but they don't have a business model or any idea at all how they plan on actually generating revenue from those same domains.

Building out without a clear direction and business objective is another way of ripping up cash. Personally, I'd rather spend the money on a nice holiday. Like my kids leaving the door open building out a domain is often a distraction. You can waste a lot of time without any tangible result.

One of the problems that I experience at ParkLogic is the huge number of opportunities that come across my desk that all suggest that we will make a million dollars from them. I end up spending quite a lot of time wading my way through these distractions that all appear good ideas and make sure that the business is really focused on adding value to clients.

So when you look at what you've been up to this last week pretend you're a client and ask yourself the question, "What added value to my domain portfolio and what was a distraction?" In the meantime, I've got to go and close the door.......again!
