Please excuse the rant that I'm about to have but if like me you love the domain industry then I'm sure you'll enjoy it! I never thought that I’d put the words “domainer” and “scumbags” in the same sentence but it’s long overdue. There are a whole lot of domainers that are great people and there are a lot of scumbags…..so a message to all the good guys, beware!

Saturday MusingsOur industry that I love and cherish is currently being inundated with the lowest of the low and the problem is growing worse not better. The practices of these people have moved from impacted our wallets to stealing who we are and I thought that it was about time that I exposed some of their practices.

1.    I have 200 domains which do $300 per day with good TQ traffic. Sure you do….I believe it, NOT! It just so happens that the majority of these domains are .infos and your IP address says that your from China while your street address in the account application is LA. The traffic is garbage and I don’t want any of it since it will directly lower the revenue line of good customers.

2.    We’ve recently had a lot of “good domainers” apply for a whole lot of ParkLogic accounts. Why do I know they’re good? When you’ve been in the industry as long as I have then you make a lot of personal friends and when a personal friend signs up for an account rather then just having a chat with you then you know something is up. One scumbag signed up with all of my friends personal details and then progressively began to steal their reputation and identity. Sadly, I couldn’t quite get all the correct details of the thief out of them before they realised that I was collecting data to hopefully pass onto my friend’s lawyers!

3.    I want to buy a parking account and I’ll pay anything up to $2,000. You’ve got to ask why would anyone bother buying a parking account? Why not just sign-up yourself? The reason why is that these people are such rabid scumbags that they’ve developed a reputation amongst all the parking companies so that that they are now individually completely blocked from signing up or even their whole nation is blocked! They’re now getting other people to sign-up for them and they then pump their garbage traffic down the pipe to destroy good domainers value.

4.    I can manage click through rate to whatever you want. Yes, I did have someone tell me this. This is “bot” traffic and is fraud, fraud, fraud! This is stealing from advertisers and WILL NOT be tolerated. I’m always amazed that these scumbags spend huge amounts of time developing more sophisticated ways to try and “beat” the system when if they applied their technical skills to what is good then they’d probably be rich by now.

My company, ParkLogic is a fraudsters worst nightmare. Why do I say this? For a start, anyone that doesn’t completely fill out the sign-up form are immediately rejected. Secondly, they must pass an interview process that asks some very specific questions (some of these questions would surprise you). Around 98% of potential new customers are eliminated at this stage

Thirdly, we have our own anti-fraud checks in place that are being continuously run across accounts. Lastly, because we work with every major monetisation partner a scumbag has to also pass EVERYONE’s anti-fraud checks! If you fail on ANYONE then you FAIL on them ALL and your account is terminated. So go and pump your garbage traffic down someone else’s pipe.

So a notice to all scumbags out there that you are now on notice. The parking industry and good domain owners are sick to death of your practices and many of us are now beginning to co-operate on sharing information on your new “tricks”.

To all good domain owners. If you know of anyone that is lowering your revenue with their garbage traffic then it’s about time we expose them. The industry needs to be cleaned up for all our sakes so let’s work together to improve traffic for advertisers so that they are so hungry that they will pay more for the gold that we own!

I'm curious, what inspired you to write this post today? Was there a tipping point or just a culmination of events?

Tipping point
written by Whizzbang, July 24, 2011
It really was a tipping point. Over the last couple of months we've been inundated with fake applications and people trying to get accounts with ParkLogic through devious means. It takes time for us to vet these applications and work out who is real and trustworthy and who isn't. Don't get me wrong....I love all the good domainers and I believe that ParkLogic can help them out enormously. It gets me really angry when I see people trying to dilute good domainers traffic with garbage. I feel indignant on behalf of good domainers.

Out of interest

Hi Michael,

Interesting post - I just wondered if you apply the same rigorous vetting criteria to the listings in your "Domain Portfolios for Sale" section on your site? The way they are presented indicates that you are somehow involved / condone the claims / prices listed, but some of them seem a little questionable - eg the most recently added one? If you do vouch for them then obviously that puts them in a different light of course.

Just a thought, given your post above.

Agree
written by Mikey O'Connor, July 24, 2011
hi Michael,

couldn't agree more. i love those guys that talk about multi-hundreds of dollars/day on each of their domains. heck, my bar.com domain doesn't get that kind of native type in traffic and it's a lot better name than most of theirs.

keep up the good work.

Portfolios for sale listings
written by Whizzbang, July 24, 2011
I actually don't apply any filtering of portfolios for sale on this site. It was purely a service that has had its day - LOL! ParkLogic now has a sale service that we've just launched that doesn't charge on a commission basis....much better!

Good for calling it as it is!
written by Roy Flanders, July 24, 2011
Michael,

Good on you for calling this "gig" out!

The more so-called blogs I read by so-called domain "experts" the more pissed-off I get; and the less must I suffer the compulsion to read their shit. I simply appreciate the folks who 1) Know this business, and 2) Show they know what they're talking about. ( God knows we DO have one- perhaps- two members of self-proclaimed, "Domain Royalty," and even though one may well go off on a solipsistic, self-centered rant from time to time-- and it may well piss me off; I still usually must admire him for his integrity, experience and longevity. Even though I got nailed way back in 1993, he was not far behind with his early vision.)

But here you go head-on into the new (up to now silent and slimy) SLEAZE of our "business." Be assured I fully share your implicit fear that it will only get worse. (And if I might add- It will get worse in many, many new and wide iterations.)

As much as I try to ignore many of the blogs out there-- it's not much different than driving by a gory car wreck. YOU] always seem to make great, good sense- and I'm most grateful I didn't just drive bye this version without looking. You make a most compelling case!

Thanks-- Roy

Confirm parking is horrible...

I take a loss with my parking accounts and do domaining for fun. I am lucky to break even every year but when I feel like building out something I also have a pot to choose from.

Couldn't agree more
written by Malcolm Mcneill, July 24, 2011
Well said. I also agree with your observations with the amount of BS that so-called domainers talk about the amount of traffic they achieve. I was beginning to feel a little inadequate, but now I realise I am not alone.

never has been much type in traffic
written by patrick, July 25, 2011
I read an excellent article last year i think that showed the direct type in numbers for domains on sedo, even the best domains only had a few the point being that type in was dead or never really existed in the volume domainers talked about numbers don't lie so the real quality was search numbers not direct type and to me relevance of the domain to the business.I have a lot of cctld names that get minimum 10 to 30,0000 exact match searches per month in Canada but have never got one direct type in mind you they are parked at sedo.
So either sedo lies or most domainers are full of s--t.
