Japan and ICANN Kobe

20190314_shinkansen Shinkansen (bullet train) at Tokyo station

I’ve been in Japan for the past eight days and it’s been a tiring and yet great time. I’m writing this blog in a few spare minutes between meetings while sitting at a table in the ICANN registration area. Please excuse me if there are any typos or grammatical errors.

I was in Tokyo for the first four days of my journey to the land of the rising sun. I’ve visited Tokyo many times and find it’s one of the most vibrant cities in the world…..besides that, it’s just a lot of fun! After a lot of great meetings, I had a chance to get out and explore the city with a few other friends that happened to be in Tokyo at the time.

There’s nothing quite like trying to work out how to buy a ticket on a Shinkansen (bullet train) to sort you out….so our first stop was Shinjuku train station. Shinjuku is a MAJOR station where trying to find out how to get out of it is an amazing feat of intellectual prowess, let alone get some bullet train tickets. Think of it as a massive escape room where the signs are designed to confuse the heck out of you.

After stopping a number of helpful Japanese passers by we managed to find the ticket booth and get our tickets to the ICANN event in Kobe. So box one was ticked. Our next port of call was a place called Akihabara or electric town.

I love checking out Akihabara as it is a suburb dedicated to electronic gizmos…..right up my alley. Building after building is jammed packed with the latest phones, computers or decidedly weird Japanese stuff that I still don’t know what they would be used for….all good fun.

A relatively short Shinkansen ride of a few hours zipped me from Tokyo to Kobe and delivered me to ICANN for several days of hectic meetings. If you haven’t been to ICANN before then the sessions are not that exciting but incredibly necessary. I personally believe that the glacial pace of making decisions at ICANN means my business won’t suddenly get blind-sided by a sudden policy change.

There’s a lot of opportunity at ICANN but I find that it takes a while to dig it out. Like any conference you need to commit to going to a number of them so that people keep on seeing your face….which means I’ll be attending more and more ICANN meetings around the world. I’m not sure if this is good or bad…..

I’m now just about to head out to Osaka airport to catch my return flight home. It’s a short one of only about 13 hours so it should be OK. Lastly, I want to thank all those people that made my time in Japan such a pleasant one.
