We Live in Amazing Times

We are surrounded by the most incredible advances in technology the world has ever seen and yet we can be accused of becoming increasingly complacent about the miraculous.

Just think about it for a second. Just over 100 years ago the Wright Brothers flew for the first time at Kittyhawk. A few weeks ago, my wife and I soared at 40,000 feet in a chair in the sky while we watched movies. Forget around the world in 80 days, we did it in 28 hours.

I watched my daughter start shaking her mobile phone in frustration because a message her friend had sent hadn’t arrived as yet. I asked her when was it sent. She replied, “A few seconds ago” and as she stormed off she yelled back, “I saw she was typing!” I presume this explained everything.

I first got online back in the 80’s and I remember sending email around the world via the amateur radio network (remember FIDONET?). It was incredible! I could write something on my computer and 2 days later I would get a response…..how fast was that! The other day I was in a skype session and the person I was speaking with sent me an email and I calmly respond a few seconds later with, “Go it.”

I love technology and have been an early adopter of an Oculus Rift VR headset. For those of you that don’t have one…..just pay the money and get one. It will open your mind to so many possibilities. Everything from entertainment through to education will be transformed by VR. If you think domain names will be immune then think again and don’t even get me started on AR.

Each day I get a digest of the latest breakthroughs in science and technology. Quantum computing that takes advantage of quantum entanglement will completely revoluntionise both computing and communications. Think of zero latency, no matter what the distance. Hopefully, even my daughter will be happy.

Over the next decade 3D printing will completely change manufacturing. The average home will have a printer that can build whatever you want from whatever you want in minutes. The value will be less in the manufacturing process and more in the creativity required behind the item you may have just purchased as a 3D blueprint.

For space exploration, 3D printers have become an absolute necessity. The International Space Station recently had one shipped up to it in a trial for future missions to Mars. Why? To put it simply, you no longer have to transport a whole lot of spare parts…..if you need one then just print it out.

Teleportation is becoming a reality…..yes, you read that right. About ten years ago, a team at Melbourne University in Australia teleported a beam of light (ie. photons) across the other side of their laboratory. Five years ago, a team in Vienna did the same thing across a river. More recently, Chinese scientists teleported light across a city and last August they launched the first quantum computing satellite to teleport data outside the bounds of space and time.

The LHC (Large Hadron Collider) has been the site of a number of scientific breakthrough but at 27 kilometers it’s just too small. The solution, plans are now in place to build one in the vacuum of space that is massively larger and infinitely more sensitive. This will provide scientists with the data they require for unpacking the fundamental particles of the universe.

After 25 years in space, the Hubble telescope is about to be replaced with a series of satellites that will make Hubble look like a 70’s polaroid camera. As well as some great happy snaps the new telescope will open up images of new worlds that are tantalisingly close to us. Those exo-planets are just at the edge of our fingertips.....

Tesla and SpaceX founder, Elon Musk, is focusing his attention on establishing a million-person colony on Mars within the next 30 years. Sounds like a dream? I don’t think so. In less than 15 years he’s managed to build a company that has done what NASA found was near to impossible…..returnable rockets. This alone is going to drive down the cost of satellite launches as rocket engines can be continuously reused. If you take this a little further you don’t have to be a scientist to realise this is the technology that will be required to land and also lift off Mars.

Nano-technology is real and stem cells are completely transforming traditional medical solutions. Despite world leaders, energy is trending towards renewables and who knows, we may even crack fusion power in the next 20 years.

Amongst all of these amazing advances (I’ve only mentioned a few) we have domain names. There are so many things that we can do with domains that it is mind boggling…..so what are the advances that should happen in the near future?

Now ParkLogic Next is being rolled out we are working on a number of revolutionary solutions to domains that will solve a number of the conundrums that the industry has wrestled with over the years. It’s exciting and keeps me enthralled with an industry that I love…..so watch this space!

In the meantime, I hope you have been inspired by this article that you received to an incredibly powerful device via electrons and light circumnavigating the world at the speed of light.

Have a great weekend!

I will agree we are in a time of great leaps in technology. I will have to look closely at the new VR stuff. Sounds like " Beam me up Scotty " is not as far fetched as it once seemed with all the innovations in teleporting. I have seen some of things you can do with 3D printing and it is something to keep eye on to see how far it will go. I watched a video showing the people making tools and presenting interesting implications of what can be done. Just think, it wasn't that long ago we did math with an abacus because calculators hadn't been invented. The world has come a long way. Even when I went to college we weren't allowed to use them, ( calculators ), until we got to Logarithms, LOL.

I remember using log tables to do multiplications of big numbers. I've also kept my grandfathers slide rule for posterity sake.

We were using log tables to figure exact payoffs for mortgages and auto loans at that time.

On the Hubble, I hope they grind the lens right this time so it doesn't have to be fitted with "glasses " like the last time. I'm sure they have regulations in effect to prevent mistakes because that is a huge lens. sometimes I feel as though I am barely hanging on having a late start, but that means I just have to be more well read. Love your blogs Michael, very informative.
