Saturday Musings – Make Decisions

20190818_harrypotter Our son slept under the stairs just like Harry Potter.

One of the most difficult things in life is making decisions. You only have to reflect on the number of times you’ve broken a New Year’s resolution or diet to get a glimpse into the fact that many of us are really bad at following through on our decisions.

The result of our inability to make a decision is often or not empowering other people to make them on our behalf. For instance, if you are struggling financially you can either take the difficult road of reducing your expenses or let the bank make the decision on your behalf.

Let me share with you a story from my life. Just under twenty years ago I had a thriving business, was worth millions (on paper) and thought the world was my oyster. Within the space of twenty-four hours I went from hero to zero when an investor reneged on a commitment. My wife and I were instantly thrust into dire financial circumstances.

We immediately examined all our expenses, sold our cars, bought a cheap buzz box so that our expense line was massively reduced. We jammed ourselves and our three kids into a bright yellow Mazda 121 and even though we copped a lot of ridicule we knew that it would only be temporary. It was a difficult decision to stay the course, but we continued moving forward.

Once the expense line was sorted out, we focused on the revenue side of the ledger. We made the difficult decision to have our two girls share a bedroom and rented the now spare room out to foreign students. At one stage we had our son sleep under the stairs (think of Harry Potter) so that we could temporarily rent out his room. He loved it by the way! We even rented our living room out to a business that needed some extra space…..all to get money in the door.

The result of our decisions (there were many others) was we had an income that was greater than our expenses. From this point we could make additional decisions to improve our personal situation. The key with all these decisions is to not just make them but to follow them through with actions.

I look at my life now and it’s completely different from those difficult times. That being said, last weekend I reviewed the personal cashflow budget and both Roselyn and I made decisions to secure new exciting personal financial goals moving forward. We don’t just wander through life hoping things will get better, we make decisions to make them better.

Have we always been this way? Yes, pretty much so. We discovered a long time ago that if something bad happens in life then face it head-on and make decisions to deal with the situation. Whether they are financial, relationships or whatever the situation it’s far better to acknowledge the problem rather than putting your head in the sand.

This weekend I would encourage you to take a look at your own life and ask yourself if there are some decisions you need to make and the follow through on them.

Have a great weekend.
Michael
