Will Bitcoin Continue to Rise and Inevitably Fall?

20171229_tulip

I've received quite a lot of feedback on my previous article on Bitcoin and rather than reply to them I thought it would be best to write a follow-up article. Most of the comments I've received mistakenly construed the fact that I was drinking the Bitcoin Kool-aid and that we should all buy, buy and buy some more before it's too late.
Escrow.com

Bitcoin, like fiat currency, at its core is a concept. If enough people buy into the concept, then it has value. What I was commenting in my previous article is not whether you should buy or not but whether the Bitcoin was going to go up. All the indicators from volume of transactions (both monetarily and value) are still rapidly going heading north which suggests a growing demand for essentially a dwindling supply.

The reduction is supply is largely due to people holding their coins in the belief the price will continue to rise. Why sell today when you can sell tomorrow for $1,000 more.

Until the "currency" stabalises the dream of Bitcoin being used to buy a cup of coffee will remain just that, a dream. The wild hourly swings mean Bitcoin is largely driven by speculation.....the question is when will the speculation tap out…..as it must.

Of recent days, the traditional media has massively escalated their interest in Bitcoin (and crypto-currencies in general) and this has helped stoked the fires of demand with fresh largely uninformed speculators. It also didn't help that a number of major institutions got onboard as well....!

The flood of money into Bitcoin combined with the reducing supply pushes the value upwards.....welcome to the exciting world of the seventeen hundreds tulip bubble.

There will be a correction with Bitcoin (or even a crash) the challenge is to work out when this will occur. It could be caused by the technology reaching a critical point as transactions take longer to complete but there is one thing for sure, as long as there is greed then people will continue to roll the dice.

The comments in my previous article relate to the massive increase in Bitcoin demand.....not whether Bitcoin is worth buying into. I personally have exited most of my crypto-currencies OUT of Bitcoin as I don't see an underlying business model that doesn't smack more like a casino. If Bitcoin stabilizes and becomes usable as a means of transacting, then this business model may cause me to reevaluate my position.

I believe the rise of Bitcoin (separate to blockchain) is a symptom of a number of things:

  1. The 2008 Global financial crisis and the lack of faith this sparked in financial institutions.
  2. The desire to conduct commerce directly between parties without an intermediary that many people are viewing charges fees not in proportion to their value added.
  3. True anonymity in financial transactions - this is good and bad.
  4. Speed of transactions versus the current slow systems.
  5. Greed….people will always have a dream of making quick money.

This then brings me back to blockchain. Forget all of the sophisticated definitions of what blockchain is or is not. Domain investors can view blockchain like a fancy DNS system with an overlay of encryption that can automatically verify both parties in a transaction and then record the event back to the DNS.

Just about everything in the world is comprised of interactions between entities (people, corporations etc.) and the blockchain can facilitate these interactions. This is one of the reasons why I like investing in Ethereum as they are trying to solve the problem of automating digital contracts.

This is fantastic news for artists, musicians, authors etc. who have previously relied upon a central authority (eg. Publisher, agent, record producer etc.) to collect their royalty payments. My understanding is this now has the potential to be done automatically.

Ripple is another currency that I have a strong belief in as they are trying to solve the problem of interbank transfers. In particular, international transfers that have previously taken days to complete can now typically take seconds at a fraction of the cost.

Both Ethereum and Ripple have clear business models that underpin the value the bring to the table. They are using the blockchain technology in very innovative ways to solve real problems….and there are many other “coins” that are working on similar issues.

My guidance would be to conduct your own investigation of the blockchain technology and to not get caught up in the coin hype. Let me assure you that you will find some gold amongst all of the noise and speculation.

Feel free to join the Crypto Currency group in the Domainers Network. I’m a firm believer that it’s through robust discussion that we can help each other learn about and take advantage of new technologies like the blockchain.

What's going to happen in 2018?

Fall

Not sure if you have used bitcoin lately, especially on CoinBase, but it takes 8-12 hours to send/receive bitcoin transaction. Credit card is instant, same with PayPal. The promise of bitcoin was SPEED. The promise of bitcoin was NO FEES. Now to send $160 in bitcoin through coinbase costs $23. The people buying into it now are the "get rich quick" group and they will surely lose out on it. Love the idea of bitcoin, but the new backend they are using is making it useless.

Completely agree with you that Bitcoin has some real problems on both price and speed.....maybe Bitcoin cash will solve these.

Bitcoins are dirt in the road when compared with ( .COM Equimoditty Platform Assets )

As you already know, there are Domains and then there are their Strategic Superiors ( .Com Equimoditty Platform Assets ) . The World will soon know the differences between the two. JAS 12/29/17

WE like your previous comment for its Example JAS

Hello Michael,

R. E. to = ( 6. Like I said, there's only one market that I've seen behave like Bitcoin.....and that's domains. )

One Caveat though = Very much Unlike Quality of Cryptos in current structure, Domains are useful Economic structures, whereas Cryptos are nothing more, right now, than Pyramid style Con/Jobs . JAS

All top 20 crypto going higher

All top 20 crypto will go higher whether it makes sense or not.
Don’t try to make sense of it or you will lose out.
Invest now and wake up 5 years later.
The fall out will come but not until after 7 years of good run up.
The time to buy is NOW.
Good Luck!!!

I got into domaining in 2014....Sold a number of domains at $xx,xxx in that time, most sales i made were $xxxx. I made a decent amount of money, although i had to work hard reaching out to thousands of potential buyers.
I got crypto in may 2017....Currently my portfolio is worth $xxx, xxx. With no real work....just buy and hodl.
My regret is i didnt get in earlier this year. Regarding domains, the real winners are the guys that got in real early between 1995 and 2005. During that time i was a kid, last thing on my mind was making money.
This is one crazy ride.

First of all let me congratulate you on the domain sales! Well done on that! Anything worthwhile always takes time. It will be interesting to see what happens in 2018 with crypto-currencies......
