Industry Update - 18th Sept 2020

An incredible event happened this past week!

This past week we have seen a benchmark change in the domaining monetization landscape. I thought I’d never see it happen, but it did, and I believe it will be the precursory to a seismic shift in how domains are monetized.

So, what am I talking about? For the first time in many years the average Google normalized RPM (revenue per thousand visitors) was higher than the direct advertisers. It was a single data point but one that I believe forebodes massive changes in the online advertising landscape as Google pulls back its market share.

This week’s charts are packed full of invaluable information for those domain investors that are wanting to monetize their traffic more effectively. The coming weeks are going to be incredibly fascinating as the journey towards Christmas moves forward.

Industry Update - NamesCon

Were you at Names?

During this past week I had the privilege of releasing the weekly Industry Update at NamesCon Online. I must admit that the online conference far surpassed my expectations and the sessions and networking opportunities were awesome….even if I was up from 1am-5:30am each day.

I thought I’d re-record the presentation I did at NamesCon as it also included a few things prior to the usual weekly statistics. What the first few slides really highlight is just how much the domain monetization industry has changed over the years as more and more innovation is driving greater returns from traffic.

I would like to thank the entire NamesCon team for putting on a great event. Also, it was great catching up with old friends and meeting some great people that I know I’ll refer to as friends in the future.

Here is a PDF file of the presentation I did at NamesCon.

Let me know your thoughts on NamesCon. What was good, what could be improved and most importantly, what you got out of the conference that’s going to impact your business.

Industry Update - Week 25

Great statistics and analysis in this week's review.

In this week’s video I share about a new master class I’ve just released on MasterClass Lessons (https://mcl.club) that discusses how to do a proper traffic test. It’s a little bit more advanced than the others in the Monetization series as I discuss macro, micro and group analysis strategies.

The statistics continue to amaze me as I pull some interesting insights into what is happening to the online advertising industry. Google is continuing to surge forward while the direct advertising networks are winning more traffic. All great information to domain investors in the traffic space.

Industry Update - Week 24

New charts that really show how much has changed in the industry.

This week I add a couple of new charts to the regular analysis that really highlights the massive change we’ve seen this year so far. You won’t believe just how much more Google is paying for traffic now compared to the beginning of the year.

We can see that Google is powering forward by increasing their normalized RPM compared to the flatlining of the Direct Advertising networks. That being said, I think the Direct Advertising networks will spring back into action as the threat from COVID-19 subsides.

I also discuss a couple of new lessons I plan on adding to MasterClass Lessons next week….so those of you that thought you were finished, yep, there’s more on the way.

Industry Update - Week 23

A great week filled with stunning data.

This week’s highlight would have to be the continued rise of Google as they pay more for valuable domain traffic. The normalized RPM charts of both Google and direct advertisers are amazing due to the fact that Google is clearly after more of the quality traffic.

Advertising network Pubmatic recently reported that Q2 mobile spend soared 71% over the last year and this is clearly evident in the numbers that I’m reporting. It’s a boom time for the domain industry and it’s only a couple of weeks until we start the rush towards Christmas.
